No matter how long you’ve been wearing makeup, if you don’t know a few tricks of the trade, what you apply can look overdone and obvious. The trick to beautiful makeup is not to look like you’re wearing too much product (unless, of course, you’re going for that late night smoky eye finish). So how do you achieve that flawless finish with minimal effort? You start with a good base. Here’s how:

Cleanse & Ice

The most essential step to the perfect application is a freshly cleansed and moisturized canvas. Make sure to cleanse at night and in the morning to remove any leftover debris or excess sebum before you begin patting on foundation or powder. You can further prep the skin by dabbing your face lightly with ice to tighten your skin and pores before applying.

New Skin in a Flash

Cleansing is a great (and necessary) start, but you can take it a step further with a weekly DERMAFLASH treatment for a truly jaw dropping palette. This ground-breaking device removes dead skin cells and built up debris, while also temporarily removing peach fuzz!! Baby soft, radiant skin is revealed. DERMAFLASH creates the perfect canvas for both skin care and make up. Here’s how it works.

Don’t Skip Primer

Primer can work wonders for makeup application. How? Well, primer fills in fine lines while also masking pores. It’s an essential skin prepping step and promises to lock in your look and keep it looking fresh all day. Apply to skin that is freshly moisturized and remember, a little primer goes a long way. Using clean fingertips or a makeup sponge, start with a little on your cheeks, the center of your forehead, chin and nose and dab outward until it’s completely blended in. Light coverage is key, so don’t over do it. To combat redness or brighten sallow or dull complexions, you might try out a tinted primer. This will give an extra boost of brightness to your overall look.

Do Foundation Right

Though primer will help to balance your skin tone, an evenly applied foundation is essential for any flawless look. Too much and your makeup will look cakey and overdone. Too little and your coloring will be off. The key? Finding the perfect foundation that works for your skin type and applying it correctly.  For day, Consider a tinted moisturizer or BB/CC cream.  These multi tasking formulations combine skin loving ingredients with sunscreen and coverage, great for the gal on the go.

For evening or when a little more coverage is needed, cream foundation is ideal. Apply in the center of your face and move outward towards your hairline for a complete look. If you need to apply more you can, but start with a light layer. Powder foundation is a great option, especially for oily skin, but doesn’t’ offer quite as much coverage as cream. Liquid foundations are another option that offer great coverage. Foundation pens are also popping up everywhere and provide precise application for touch ups. For all types of foundation finger- tip application is fine (as long as your hands are clean).  Sponges are great and you can tailor the application by varying the amount of water you moisten them with. Finishing your application with a light layer of facial oil provides an extra glow and is a little known A-lister secret.

Conceal The Issue

Concealer is tricky business. We know the last thing you want is to worry about are dark circles. Start by applying a brightening serum or under eye cream. These will work with the concealer to hide the dark circles without having to apply multiple layers of concealer. If your foundation of choice is powder, we suggest applying foundation first and then concealer to avoid a cakey look. Apply the concealer in three small dots directly under the eye in an upside down triangular fashion. Use your fingertips or a blending sponge to gently blend the dots together and brighten the area underneath your eye. If you’re concealing a blemish, dab the concealer on instead of rubbing. If that doesn’t achieve the look you want, try finishing with a concealer brush.

Try these tips before applying your signature eye, lip, and cheek makeup, and you’ll be surprised at just how much more polished and natural they look.
